The Longest Shot Wins the Dr. Edgar Wickberg Book Prize – Vernon Morning Star
/The Longest Shot: How Larry Kwong Changed the Face of Hockey, co-authored by George Chiang and Chad Soon, has been awarded the 2025 Dr. Edgar Wickberg Book Prize for the best book on Chinese Canadian history. The authors, along with illustrator Amy Qi, accepted the award from the Chinese Canadian Historical Society of British Columbia at a ceremony in Vancouver.
The children's book details the life and legacy of Vernon hockey icon Larry Kwong, who broke the NHL’s color barrier in 1948. In its citation, the Society noted that the biography "goes beyond statistics to provide intimate details of Kwong's personal journey and the systemic discrimination faced by Chinese Canadians," adding that the work ensures a "trailblazing hero's contributions are finally recognized."
