George Chiang Stars in “Bachelor Man” at Tarragon Theatre
/George Chiang is returning to the stage this September in a powerful new production that shines a light on a lesser-known chapter of Canadian history. Presented by Renaissance Canadian Theatre, Bachelor Man, written by Winston Kam and directed by Brenda Kamino with Diana Belshaw, will run from September 2 to 14, 2025, at Tarragon Theatre Mainspace, Toronto.
Set on Dominion Day, 1929, in a Chinatown teahouse, Bachelor Man paints an intimate and haunting portrait of a group of Chinese Canadian men—husbands and fathers—who are forced to live alone, without their families, under the harsh legacy of the Chinese Exclusion Act. Through one long, tension-filled day, these “bachelors” grapple with the emotional weight of separation, the absurdity of discriminatory laws, and the strength found in brotherhood, humour, and hope.
George plays one of the central characters in this darkly funny and deeply human story, which is as timely today as ever. With immigration and exclusion policies resurfacing in public discourse across the globe, Bachelor Man invites audiences to reflect on our shared past—and the lives that history has often forgotten.
This production also marks the debut of Renaissance Canadian Theatre Company, founded by Andrew Moodie and Brenda Kamino, a new venture committed to reviving overlooked works of the Canadian stage.
